Blue was originally conceived in 1993. It was then we realized our personal need for an organized, western-style spiritual practice and community to support us in living our best lives, but combined with what resonates with us -- the experience that we are one with everything right now already.
We also came up with the circle-eye as the symbol in 1993.
In the 20 years following that, we read many spiritual books, we investigated many practices, we took courses at divinity school, attempted to meditate… and most of the time, we just lived life. We got married, had kids, took care of aging parents, suffered through sickness, moved to new communities, and experienced losses and wins in our careers. We saw friends get divorced, get addicted, suffer illness and depressions, have kids, and struggle to find their ways, just as we were.
In 2004, James found and secured the URL www.blue.com as a home for the idea.
It wasn’t until the Fall of 2014 that James Currier and Jared Hutchings met. Both were fathers of children at the same local public school in Palo Alto. They first talked about spirituality at a dinner for families at the Hutching’s home in Palo Alto.
James had been brought up atheist, but longed for spirituality and community. Jared had been brought up Mormon, and sought something equally positive and strong with community, but felt more in tune with his worldview. James shared some ideas about Blue. That first week, Jared and James began meeting to discuss a plan of action. They first created a wiki to share ideas and sources of inspiration. After 8 months, they sent out an email to their friends who they thought might resonate with the idea of creating a community.
The first Blue Gathering took place in June 2015 at the annex building of the Mormon Church in Atherton, CA. The topic we discussed was Kindness. About fifteen people came and sat in a circle of chairs, including four children, curious as to what would happen and what the plan was, if any.
Monthly gatherings have happened every month since, either in parks or in the back yards of Jared or James’ houses. The topics have been things like Forgiveness, Attitude, Courage, Loyalty, Service, and Gratitude. The Gathering keeps evolving and through word of mouth from the Bluists, more people keep adding themselves.
The Blue community had its first Novalion (coming of age ceremony for 13 year olds), in June 2016 and over 100 people attended in semi-formal attire. Speeches were given, original music was sung, gifts of wisdom were given, tears were shed, food was shared, and a good time was had by all.
We had our first annual Blue Campout in August 2016, in the Sierras near Lake Tahoe, and over 50 people slept in tents and swam in the swimming hole for two days and nights. No one wanted to stop the Blue Service and it lasted nearly two hours instead of a typical one hour.
